Do you have an old headboard and are wanting to repurpose it? Maybe you found one in the trash and thought “I can turn that headboard into a bench. Stick with me as I am going to share with you these 9 different headboards repurposed into a bench.
DIY Headboard Bench Styles
Each headboard and footboard will create different styles of benches. You will need to work with the style of the headboard to determine the best way to turn it into a repurposed headboard bench.
Corner Bench
A corner headboard bench is not a common way of repurposing a headboard. However, certain queen and king-size headboards work perfectly for this style of bench.
For this solid queen bed, we decided to just use the headboard and turn it into corner seating. See the entire process in this post, queen headboard repurposed to a corner bench.

The beds that make a good corner bench are the ones that have a solid divide down the center of the headboard and are queen or king-size beds.
The finish on this corner bench is Franciscan Gray with a licorice glaze. The bench seat has a grey gel stain.
Poster Style Bench
A poster-style bed is one of my favorites to turn into a bench. The upright rails make for added detail to the bench. A big bonus is when you have the footboard and can utilize that in the design as the side rails or the front of the bench.
See all the details on how to make a poster headboard bench. I find this type of bench looks best if you also have the footboard that goes with the headboard. You can use the footboard as the side rails or use it for the front of the bench.
For this poster headboard bench, we used the footboard as the side rails and built the seat.
This is one of my favorites. We used the footboard for the front side of the bench since it had such great details and features. By flipping the footboard over we were able to utilize the flat side for the seat to have a smooth transition.
I used Westminster and black glaze. I also added the stencil details using a silkscreen stencil from Redesign by Prima.
This is another poster bed set using the footboard as the side rails and a built bench seat. The bench seat was stained using a gray gel stain on the bench seat. The finish on the bench is Seagull Gray and has a black glaze.
Storage Bench
Building storage into a DIY headboard bench is a bit more challenging.
This bench came with a host of challenges due to the curved nature of the footboard. We had to flip over the footboard to utilize the straight edge on the bottom. Along with adding a bottom for the storage section and the split flip-open bench seat.
I finished this bench using a Powder Glazing Finish. Powder glazing brings out all the carved details and enhances the beauty of this repurposed headboard storage bench.
Twin Headboard Bench
Sometimes even the simplest and plain bed can make a headboard bench.
This twin french provincial headboard and footboard made a simple bench. We used the footboard for the front and built the seat frame. The finish is Alabaster with a brown glaze. The stencil was added using the brown glaze as well.
This basic twin bed made the cutest bench. See the details on how to build this Tye-Dye Repurposed headboard. The bench did not sell with the original turquoise paint and tye-dye seat so I gave it a new finish and it sold right away.
Every one of these beds was found in the trash. Each one turned out to be a unique repurposed headboard bench.
